Because the OCD in Trip Planning is Kicking In

The geek and socialite in me is beginning to have mad sex with each other.
Yeah that sounds dirty but you know what I mean.

I’m getting ready for my upcoming trip to SXSW. where I’ll be sitting on a panel moderated by Ms. Molly.

In process for this I’ve done the following:
#1. Purchased a new toy

#2. I’ve updated and groomed my contacts list via Plaxo and my work PC.

#3. I’ve updated my Calendar including the feed from Upcoming.org onto my personal Ical.

#4. I’ve updated my new toy with all my contacts and calender by successfully exporting and syncing the data on my pretty little mac. and the new toy.

#5. I’m including among my notes my flight and car rental reservations.

So the reason why I’m telling you all this is so that you’ll buy me a beer in Texas we can coordinate good times while I’m there.

So.

If a) you have updated contact information that I should be privy to, then please update me of this.

b) If you happen to be getting in to Austin around the same time as I am and would like to share a ride in from the airport to Austin proper then please email me.

Arrive in AUSTIN TX(AUS) at 01:50PM on 3/11/05
Car rental and picking up of Ms. Glenda to occur by 2:30. I will also be doing another nightime airpport run at ~ 10:30 PM to pick up the lovely Ms. Nicole .

Could squeeze two more peeps in my renta-hoopty if you like. Feel free to hit me up for a ride. Save the cab fare for beer. That’s my motto, babykins.

OK: So have I convinced you yet that this whole notion of Geek Girl Collisions is ever so true for yours trully?

Pucker Up.

Rumors are true.

I’m going to SXSW.

Min Jung’s Half Assed Predictions for 2005 and Beyond

I am not responsible for these predictions. They came out of my ass. Or at least half of my ass. The left cheek isn’t fessing up to any accountability.

1. Wireless phone providers will integrate and apply the social networking phenomena:
Moving beyond current uses explored in other countries like the UK for “toothing” for cruising and dodgeball for spontaneous social interactions, wireless service providers will build or acquire online social networks to retain their user base and provide more social profile information to their subscribers. Once you get a new person’s phone number and they’re on the same service plan as you, you’ll be able to access personal profile information which individuals may choose to share online. Upcoming.org and Evite or similar services will become integrated with the Wireless service provider directly to provide reminders of planned events, directions, (incorporating voice activated or sms information like TellMe) and rendezvous with colleagues, friends and family. Individuals may elect to include GPS tracking information or not. Pay phones make a comeback among the paranoid.

2. Transparent Messaging
Automobiles will come with an option to include glass that allows for transparent messaging that will appear on the glass but will not inhibit safe driving. Defaults will include “Slow” “Help” and “Maps”. Individuals may hack into these systems to bring cruising to the next level with their number or custom messages like “Get off my ass, you lame driver.” or “I am so more faster and furioser than u” Those annoying RedBull trucks — oh yeah baby. Even more annoying. Messages will also be used to help identify stolen vehicles as these will be controllable remotely. Lo jack to the next level.

3. Civic Online Identities
Each individual will be issued an online identity by which they will be able to maintain all civic activities. Paying taxes, registering vehicles, voter registration and voting, checking out books, and taking care of fines. A resurgence of digital civic activity will change the way that citizens behave and interact with their local communities. Local politics will take center stage since folks are more than generally bored or depressed as hell about national and international politics. Taking after the techsavvy mobilization utilized in Korea’s last presidential election, organizers will utilize SMS, IM, and videoblogbroadcasting to encourage and deploy more aggressive tactics.

4. Hacking P2P networks – New Frontiers
Some very clever geeks will create a distributed broadband based media sharing network utilizing bandwidth from one of the mogul cable providers and disk space on the digital video recorders. (DVRs).

5. Interactive Multimedia Porn
Taking on the best of Subservient Chicken and the Stepford Wives, Paris Hilton will position herself any way you wish, pant, gasp, gag, and talk on the cell phone while hundreds of horny young men living in their mother’s basement put on head phones and *cough* plug themselves into a USB or Firewire vagina. Piggybacking and going beyond Apple’s multi-color variations, the interactive vagina will also come in furry and non furry varieties. Disposable post-ejaculatory sleeves will be available in packs of 40 or 100.

And what are your predictions?

Funny Thing about Tech.

Moi: HAHAHAHA , your ichat status has you listening to Hall & Oates!
Anon: Shut up man.
Moi: What’s next? Laura Branigan?
Anon: Have you no respect for the dead?
Moi: You mean Hall, or Oates?
Anon: Laura Branigan
Moi: Oh. Shit. Sorry.
Anon: For shame.
Moi: My bad.
Anon: Especially with Barry Manilow coming up after Rick James on your play list.
Moi: He’s got a new album out. Damn. I guess I’m that kind of superfreak.
Anon: I definitely wouldn’t take you home to meet mother.

Holy Crap.

Ok now, I’ve gotten 3 invitations to check out Multiply. Woopy.
And then some bumps in activity re: Myspace and relationship linking.

So in curiosity, cuz I dig checking out what’s going on in the social networking sphere (though not enough people actually use Dodgeball in SF to make me feel like it’s working it’s best for me) I start puttering around and register with Multiply.

Consider me crapping my pants. It’s promising a whole lot.

Particularly with regards to the functionality of importing all your contacts/profiles from Friendster/Orkut into Multiply and auto generating an invitation mail to these folks in addition to allowing for power editing/mass editing of relationship schema.

Now of course, you hyper nerds are asking … but does it XFN or FOAF.

It *does* however have over 30 different and unique descriptors to deliniate a relationship.
Not focusing as much on making new contacts (for getting laid or getting funding…in which case you may have to suck dick) as it is in developing and nurturing, providing transparency for existing relationships. Will it ever get critical mass? This always being the big question with regards to these social networking applications?

Well… if the import function works as well as it looks (i am nervous about pressing the “send” button as yet) then it very well could and we could see a mass exodus of activity from friendster and orkut (which have their alreayd existing structurual and speed limitations and server outages) to Multply (resulting in Multiply’s service outage). Some things that I see so far that could be leveraged effectively: The group calendering function that is in Tribe.net and used well, along with the fanclub/band association and group distros used well on Myspace. And then integrated blogging communitiy which vibes a little like Xanga or Livejournal. Oh, did I forget to mention the spinoff integration that they’re touting that likens itself to Flickr or Buzznet? Or the Marketplace hierarchy not unlike Craigslist and Tribe?

This is interesting. Very very interesting.

Nostalgia

Prompted by discussions the other night at Tantek’s, I’m extraordinarily nostalgic for good ol’ Usenet.

Before it got shitty.

And by shitty, I’m not referring to the flame wars, haxxors, and crap like that. I mean before the spam beyond belief that flooded servers, became massively distributed, and forced everyone else to flee the communities there.

Mind you, I haven’t read/posted/lurked on newsgroups for about 3 years now.
If you looked hard enough on Google, you’d find some posts, bad poetry, and thoughts on Miso Soup in the archives that *cough* dejanews used to put out there. (Oh man.. going back to 1995)

Wondering:
a) Are people still active in usenet? Favorite groups? Worth going back?
b) Best newsreaders for Usenet if I wanted to try heading back there?
c) I used to work for and subscribe to Supernews. My current ISP offers free accounts with Giganews. Are these still the best sources for supplementary Usenet subscriptions should I be so inclined?
d) Do the newsreaders out there…or perhaps on some backend nntp server administration side…do they have any sort of spam filtering in place?

I’m wondering if there’s anything out there for Usenet that is similar to group/collaberative spam filtering that Cloudnet’s Spamnet which uses membership based feedback to more accurately identify and filter out spam.

Is it Worth it to bother trying to “TAKE BACK USENET” in that whole 80s sort of “Take Back the Streets” campaign?

Thoughts?

Kewl.

My buddy Davezilla’s redesigned.

And yes, I’m in one of dem dere photo’s up on yon upper right side.

Hit refresh if you don’t see me right away.

Other kewl things? Hanging with Tantek, Matt, Dunston, Simon, Kristin, Jish, Jane, and Kevin for dinner in the Haight this evening. Dinah joined us for video game mischief later.

Always mischievous good fun. I’m sure they’ll have photos up soon enough or something. Silly me, forgot my v. red lipstick and my flask. I’ll know better next time. Good thing the sangria was flowing at Cha Cha Cha’s.

Silly thunks.
I’m not a big pet person. I’ve owned a fat cat before. Now I’m allergic. I live with a dog named Vinnie and bought him peanut butter once (organic, no preservitives or anthing – just peanuts) and he treats me rather ambivalently.

I have the odd sense that I must boycott watching Garfield. Not because I uh… have taste (heaven knows I got suckered in to watching Soul Plane afterall). Not because I don’t have an 8 year old to watch it with. Because it’s not fair. Straight out speciesism. If there’s an animated cat then there should be an animated dog. Odie is NOT animated. I find this wrong. Granted Odie is dumb as a brick and slobbers sufficiently to water to Mojave…but still. That’s just not right, yo.

Life stuff
I’m moving at the end of the month back to SF. Not too far from where I used to live 4 years ago. Since moving to the bay area I’ve lived in Fremont, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, SF, and Oakland. I”m swinging back counter clockwise. Busy packing.

And in fabulous news: I’m sleeping better again.
And in not so fabulous news: My RSI has been acting up again.
In good news: I still have loads of ibuprofin 800, vicadin and vicaprofin.
Weeee.

Tech Support Dorkdom

Archive: Tech Support Dorkdom
True story
I dunno why this shit always happens to me.
I’m home from work earlier this evening and I’m taking apart my computer, realizing that my pants are kind of static-ky (you know, those kind of rustle rustle rustle type of running pants that i absolutely never go running in) i decide to pull them off as I dive under my desk to take apart my computer and then install the memory card. 30 seconds later, there’s a knock on my bedroom door.

Shit.

Who’s at the door? My housemate Jon and his friend Jeff.
What can I say other than

“Hey, hold up, I’m in my panties and I’m under my desk trying install memory. Be right there”
They shout out in unison
“Woo Hoo~”
I hustle my pants back on & answer the door, explain to them that my pants are kind of staticky…
to which Jeff responds

“Please be my tech support. Please.”

Tell me again, why does shit like this always happen to me?

So I now have 5 invitations for gmail again.
Wow, they’re like tribbles and multiply when I’m not looking.

Could it be True?!

Is this the real deal?

*clapping hands eagerly*

I thought this stuff was way off in future whatever land other than the mockup I mentioned on the L-Word a while back.

Remember?

It’s fascinating understanding social dynamics/relationships/and networks.
Leveraging them is, still, of course the hard part.

Wonder what else peeps are working on…

Cute. Not.

Now while I loves me some MT and heard raves of TypePad, I can’t help but see the logo as a woman’s crack from behind with a tampon string dragging out.

*shrug*

Lillypad? My ass.
Er…not *my* ass. But well, you know what I mean.
