COMMUNITY DISCUSSION
on the role of women in the movement and an update on the current situation in Palestine.

FREE EVENT ** REFRESHMENTS SERVED
Seating is limited, please arrive early

The documentary film Women in Struggle is about Palestinian women whom are ex-political detainees demonstrating their struggle during their years of imprisonment in Israeli jails exploring the affects and influence on their present life and their future outlook.

The focus is on the lives of four women who came out of their regular roles as sisters, mothers, wives, and took on a different role being involved in the Palestinian national struggle for independence. Without narration, these women give their testimony in their own words about their past difficult experiences, of their suffering while living their daily difficult life in the current Palestinian Intifada which was not an element present during the initial research of this documentary nor was the so called “war on terror and the apartheid wall

These additional three elements have made this film critical in exploring, identifying, and understanding how these women detainees made the effort to preserve their dignity and integrate in the social and political aspects of the Palestinian life. Although these four women are out of the actual Israeli prison they actually find themselves in a bigger prison carrying “prison” within them in every aspect of their life.

Final Fridays Films, a free monthly community event produced by EastSide Arts Alliance, screens on the last Friday of every month. Alternate months¹ events are co-presented by KQED Community Outreach. Final Fridays Films is a part of Making Connections Oakland and is funded by the Annie E.Casey Foundation and Bay Area Mosaic. The EastSide Arts Alliance (ESAA) is a group of artists and community activists of color who live and work in the Lower San Antonio neighborhood of East Oakland. Founded in 1999, ESAA is dedicated to nurturing and supporting the work of the Lower San Antonio district¹s African American, Latino/Chicano, Asian, and Native American cultural workers, many of whom have not found a home within Oakland¹s mainstream arts community. Through our work, the Alliance hopes to nurture a genuinely multi-cultural community that benefits all people in our neighborhood.

“THE SARIMANOK TRAVELS”
by Francis Tanglao-Aguas

Take a trip to the Philippines in this beautifully staged one-man show
by performer-playwright Francis Tanglao-Aguas. The “Sarimanok Travels”
is “Fires in the Mirror” meets the “Vagina Monologues” but based on a
traditional Pilipino folk tale about a mystical bird that brings
harmony to a kingdom.

Francis weaves this tale full of stories and odd characters with dance
movement and poetry. This story is ultimately about one’s connection
to a ‘homeland’. Ayeta, the beautiful queen of Mahallikha spurns royal
suitors from more powerful lands, earning their wrath which they pass
on to their descendants. But the Mahallikhenos are resilient, with the
magical sarimanok bird on their side, thriving in the paradise that is
their land.

But what happens when the sarimanok bird is stolen by foreign powers?

Francis Tanglao-Aguas explores his version of the mythical roots of
the Philippines, hoping to answer why Pilipinos find themselves
leaving their beloved motherland.

APA Roundup

Oh jayzus.

I’m watching the AZN Asian Excellence awards on TV.
It’s like they got everyone who eats rice in Los Angeles to attend or be nominated to this thing.

Here’s my… uh… play by play commentary..

Hosted by Kelly Hu & Bobby Lee
Some highlights:
Bai Ling — amazingly, she kept her top on. And thank goodness, she’s not singing.
Lou Diamond Phillips – Yuppers. He’s Asian. Para Bailar La Bamba of brown = indiscriminate ethnic minority. Well, he’s got dem cheekbones.
Yunjin Kim — “I really don’t know what to say.. I’m feeling kind of Lost.. and I’m not being humble and Asian but lets…tell our stories and let’s not wait for Hollywood to determine when it’s our time… and please let’s do those great projects when I Gert killed off from Lost and when I lose my tan”

The Remy Martin XO Inspiration awards…. i mean.. dude.. how fricking korean club can you get with the Remy.

This goes to Doctor Ho who’s been doing some amazing work in researching in AIDS.
Presented by Magic Johnson. Who is not Asian. But has probably had a little Asian at some point in his life. (badump bum)

Hmmm John Cho looks like he needs a haircut.
Both Joan Chen & Michelle Krusciek won nominations for the fabulous film Saving Face which I endorse to anyone and everyone.

Holy Shit.. Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park… combining both rap & violins…. Stop.Me.From.Cracking.A.Joke.

Holy Crap … From Flower Drum Song they have Nancy Kwan and James Shigeta. Pearl Cream done good.

Outstanding Newcomer winner – Lynn Chen who was also in Saving Face. Uber cute.

Outstanding shout outs to Ismael Merchant – Lifetime achievement. Producer of some brilliant favorite films like room with a view. Must have inspired Ang Lee to work with pasty white British people. I jest. I jest.

Gratuitous fashion shows…um…kay….2 of them.

Outstanding Film winner is Kung Fu Hustle.
Go Stephen Chow and gang… but I was hoping this was going to focus more on American films with APA’s vs. overseas films that have crossed over well here to the Us.

Um… Ka… Cirque De Soleil

To note: Jackie Chan sounds way more comfortable speaking English than Stephen Chow did. And less awkwardly like it’s being read from a TelePrompter.

Biggest Asian-file in Hollywood – Quentin Terentino wins some recognition.
Sadly, he likely is still the most powerful person in Hollywood that in that room.

Best Live performance
Nominees…
Ka – Cirque De Soleil
Lennon – Broadway performance (For YOKO? YOKO?)
Linkin Park – winning for their performance in live8 (ummm… did Joe Hahn gain a little weight?.. he looks cuddly..)

Rob Shneider is presenting. I had no idea he was Hapa. huhh.

BabyPhat gets her own fashion strut showcase as well. My…word…
Kimora Lee Simmons couldn’t accept the award so Vivica Fox is sporting the bling.

Ralph Macchio gives the shout out for Pat Morita.
Mr. Miyagi would be very proud of Daniel-san. Woot.

Karen Hom doing some zither action…

Outstanding TV Male performers… — The nominees are…
Naveen andrews – Lost
Mark-Paul Gossellar of Commander in Chief
Daniel Dae Kim – Lost
BD Wong – Law & Order – SVU

So cool… only one of them who doesn’t actually look too Asian.
Daniel Dae Kim wins… totally big hotness.

Hmmm… Kelly Hu has changed outfits more time than a Taiwanese Wedding’s bride. I mean, seriously.

The Visibility Award goes to Lucy Liu and presented by Danny Devito & Rhea Perlman. Woot… Unicef Ambassador and speaks Chinese & Italian and uh.. plays the accordion?! Oh my.

And huh… 2 hours later it’s done.

How do I feel? Hmmm ok. Not as snarky as I totally could have been.

Geek Girl Collision

GookBox

Nice idea.
Terrible name.

Instead of conveying that it’s a gmail/music convergence, Gookbox sounds like the derogatory slang that an idiot would make for a Korean gal’s p*ssy.

Now that just ain’t right.

Posted by Min Jung in APA, GeekGirlCollisions, General

Just… Brilliant.

Have you ever written a FUCK YOU post?

I mean, besides to something that’s completely anthropomorphised for comic relief (ie, your belly, your ass, the previous year, your dog’s particularly sticky poo, a slice of cheese, your bass guitar, or the xbox)

One of my favorite spoken word poets Shailja is fairly well known for her extraordiarny talent, political in-your-face- unapologeticism, and general sass, and her explosively creative FUCK YOU breakup poem. It’s a fave o’ mine. I dig it. But that’s because I’m a generally lilttle angry woman and refer to the occasional ex-boyfriend affectionally with “oooh.. you mean skull-fuck… ew… why bring that up again}.

And I dig it more that she’s blogging.

And giving a big Fuck-You to hollywood.
For SHAME. Making Michelle Yeoh (who speaks perfect english) have to act in an entire film with a japanesey accent.

It’s gawddamn 2006 already. Didn’t we dump the me-so-solly accents already?

Jayzus.

Jimminy.

I was talking to my friend the other day about my (yet again) pushed out plans to go to Korea. She kept on extolling the fact that shopping was going to be phenomenal there and that I would have a blast.

And then she paused, looked at me for a second and said with hesitancy,

“um… yeah… you’ll have to be shopping in the large or extra large size section”

Which pretty much makes me want to clothesline and tackle, kick and generally bowl over all the uber-fey and extraordinarily thin girls there who would likely look at me, call me ahjoomah, call me fat, and recommend that I get eyelid surgery.

ENOUGH ALREADY.
I GOT ENOUGH FUCKING ISSUES.
MY OWN NEUROSIS HAVE OVERSTEPPED THE BOUNDERIES FROM CHARMING TO BORDERLINE DEBILITATING.

Korean Women Among Region’s Most Insecure: Poll
Korean women are among the most insecure about their looks in Asia and thus the most open to plastic surgery, a survey suggests.

The poll of 2,100 women across Asia by Unilever showed only 33 percent of Korean respondents satisfied with their appearance, the second lowest among nine countries surveyed following Japan. Of Korean respondents, 43 percent said they were overweight.
