This Year’s Annual Breakup Post

(In the tradition of past breakup posts – See 2005, 2004, 2003)
Dear 2006,

Wow. I mean. Wow.

What an amazing relationship we’ve had over the last year. Stunning. Full of life changing experiences. So much that is rich, rewarding, funny, and fun!
Where to begin!

Oh the travels!

Phoenix, Austin, Dallas, New York, Chicago, New York, Austin again.

Solaced and new soul found during roadtrips, plane trips, and train rides. Listening to Johnny Cash and remembering to take care to listen to my heart beat when I’m feeling small and looking up at big sky.

You. You 2006, you taught me that.

And when I doubted myself with what was going on with my life, vocationally, professionally, etc – you gently nudged me.

And I found great comfort and success. I got to writing and blogging again, looking at things as a professional, getting published, re-engaging my column in KoreAm, negotiating with a literary agent, getting (rightly) pissed off by *publishers* who didn’t know jack and didn’t treat me as a person or a writer with respect.

You. You dear sweet gentle 2006, you reminded me of what I was worth.
And the food!Holy goodness good eating. I mean, not that I’m dating you (or anyone) for sushi or anything, but I’ve gotten to be a cheerful little mini-fatty. But it’s been a flavorful and delightful year.

And the laughs!
Oh 2006, you’ve been so good to me and my friends, my family, and all those that I hold dear. I can’t count the number of times you’ve made me laugh so hard that I’ve wound up hurting my little nose with near violent snorting.

And the love.

Yeah. I’m all warm and cozy because of how things have changed in my life because of you this past year.

So it’s really hard for me to say goodbye to you. But you know as well as I do that this is how it always goes. Oh it’s so hard. Really. I’m getting vaklempt.

We had a really good run though, didn’t me?
Dear sweet and kind, wise and wonderful, gentle and generous 2006.

I’ll always love you.

Pay to Blogpost?

Published: December 21, 2006
Paying for Blog Juice Could Be Illegal

The FTC’s recent staff opinion might cast the legality of paid blogging programs in the U.S. in a questionable light. Underscore Marketing’s president discusses what this opinion means for marketers.

Over the past few months, several companies have entered into the business of making it easy for marketers to incentivize bloggers to write about their products and services. The most popular of these companies is PayPerPost, but others have also entered the space, including LoudLaunch (which hasn’t yet formally launched) and ReviewMe.

Back in October, a watchdog group known as Commercial Alert filed a petition with the Federal Trade Commission, requesting an investigation of companies involved in “buzz marketing,” defining the term as “a technique by which corporations seek to influence buying decisions, often by stealth.” Earlier this month, the FTC responded with a formal staff opinion, and while it declined to issue guidelines concerning the practice at the time, it did indicate it will “determine on a case-by-case basis whether law enforcement is appropriate.” So, while there won’t likely be a sweeping investigation of numerous companies at this time, the staff opinion left the door open for individual cases to be investigated.

If you’re a marketer paying people to write favorable blog posts about your company or its products, now might be the time to start sweating bullets.

Smart Marketing post of the day

Re: Sony’s marketing debacle’s of late — not the least involving fake blogs & w/o mention of that racist billboard ad.

1] Good advertising doesn’t rely on tricking, lying to or deceiving your target audience.

2] The consumer is smarter than you think, alternative marketing tactics must be genuine, authentic and in today’s world, transparent.

3] Today’s interest in brand politics means that everything you do will come under scrutiny from someone. See number 2.

4] Involve your consumer in the brand conversation, give them the tools to do so and they will repay you four-fold.

Today’s Thunk

Robert Frost

“Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.”

Last night, while my lovely boyfriend was successfully avoiding being slightly annoyed with me for being a little snookered after returning home from a PR party where i inhaled a couple of vodka tonics, I lolled on my bed and pulled out a seemingly endless series of personal diaries and journals from my past.  Printed out emails. Confessions of having phone sex with near strangers. Guilty bemusings about crushes and lust.  Restrained notations on the archeological excavation of heart bruises and breaks.  Tear stained sheets.  Plane tickets to see a boyfriend.  Rose petals pressed carefully betwen pages. Sketches. Doodles.
I read him excerpts of my past romantic bemoanings and he giggled at me.

And I thought to myself, wow. I’m still the biggest megadork ever. STILL!

But wow. It’s all worth it when I think about where I am now and who I have in my heart these days.

Squish. Mega dork.

Today’s Thunks 12.12.06

Some things you forgive:

Like your body when it decides, just for fun, to make you look wildly stupid and as if you have no self control whatsoever and persistently, absent-mindedly, and embarrassingly, publicly pick *at* your nose because you have an ingrown hair or some sort of inner nasal cavity zit thing happening there.

Some things you do NOT forgive.

Rosie Odonnell with her “Ching Chong Ching Chong” comments is one of them.

I mean seriously. Is it really *that* much different than Michael Richards’ “nigger” comment?

And as much as I don’t want say that I *ever* should be listed as politically alligned with Michelle Malkin, well, she is pretty damn clever here.

Also:

That former marketing exec of Walmart that I mentioned earlier?

Still in trouble. And updates from LinkedIn of all places, feed the rumor mill.

And seriously, for *Walmart*, do you think they’d really be ok with hiring an agency that uses this ad?

no matter how clever it is?

Also:

After spending the weekend with DrMcNerdyNerdy and his daughter this weekend, I have had a wierd shift in awareness about the whole “family/parenting” thang which seems so wildly foreign from my normal life of cheeky single frivolty and general irresponsibility.

BUT!

With other marketing/ad related news of this site Babble.com

leading me to updates on Blogher here on this post

led me to parenthood blogger Pierre Kim (yay! Korean papas!) and Rice Daddies

which includes links to another blog called Brain Dump and also leads me back to Kimchi Mamas which also rants on Rosie but also includes a fundraising project for Asian Pacific Women’s Center (link currently down) which I’m sure to drop some dollars at this season.

So yeah, korean people, parenthood, blogging, kimchi, rice, cussing, professional fuckups, and the world colliding in some sort of cosmic logic that I have no insight into whatsoever.

Which leads me to feel today weirdly angry, displaced, and hopeful at the same time.

More people calling out BullShit

This piece articulates a lot of what I’ve had in my gut for a while and some of the ideas discussed at last months Web 2.2 event that Chris & Kristi put together.

Well done.

Though being within the community and *being* an influencer to a certain degree, I have some nuance differences with the “worst case scenario” marketer that is shown here.

Still at its core: Marketing, when done well, is about metrics & measurability, product, execution, messaging, and strategy.

Not a business of “well I’m cool and people listen to me so you should give me money so I can travel to France and tell other people why they should listen to me because i know what’s real and marketers don’t.”

I’m just saying.

When your career makes it into the news

It’s not always a good thing.

For example — in today’s inbox was  my latest Advertising Age digest.  What apparently seemed noteworthy and newsworthy was the recent change in employment status for a particular blonde walmart marketing executive.

And while I have absolutely no personal experience or opinions on the character of Miss Julie Roehm directly, I find it fascinating that this entire article is a thinly veiled way of saying

“OMG – that total slut finally got her ass canned for fucking around with the people in the office.”

Wow. Sounds like a lot of people will be looking for lawyers this week.
