While in Chicago & NYC I walked loads. I find it a little embarrassing that I haven’t done nearly as much walking in SF which I now, after 10 years, consider my home town.
So today I walked from the inner richmond all the way down to the Castro. 3.4 miles. With hills.
I’m stinky and sweaty but it was such a gorgeous day today I had to do it. Ya know?
Peace out!
So I’ve been recruited to participate in citizen media coverage of the SFIFF. Good times. The kickoff was last night with a movie gathering at Casa Arguello with old friends & new to watch Street Fight along with several dozens of other sf folks to share in the kickoff of the Film Festival. Hurray for everyone who came! Kevin Smokler who coordinated the eventJason Schultz who brought brownies (plain), Ted Rheingold, who I made take off his shoes because who knows what kind of dog stuff he stepped inSteve Rhodes, who ate my sloppy quesadillas, Nicole Lee who performed at Lap-Pop!, Josh Wolf who says I make funny faces when I say things like “Group Picture”. Enric who’s tainted my household with bringing a pc into the home. (Just kidding Enric!). Jonathan, the exroommate also came and brought good news about the other exroommate (non consynchronous) Jason who is happily outta the hospital and recovering well. Smooches Jason!
It was fun; looking forwards to checking out more films at the festival…
The online listing of the entire program are available before you figure out which theatre to park your ass at all day.
The Kabuki Theatre is totally my choice.
How excited am I to spend about 30 hours sitting on my ass.
I mean, seriously!
There are a number of films that I’m going to be doing my best to cover during the film festival. They are listed below and if you’re interested in syncing it up to your ical, google calendar, or whatnot, I’ve listed my movie choices from the Kabuki theater up and subscribable on Upcoming.org and you can go ahead and sync it up or add your own film selections/options yon there.

It was a very good night.
Lots of pix here care of Mr. Mocha Monkey
And of course yon on Flickr as well.
Ok,
So of late I’ve been on a couple of different but not diametrically opposed thought processes of late.
#1. My 1 second thingie. If I live an environmentally conscientious life, then perhaps I can help extend the life of the planet by one solitary second. Join me if you like.
#2. What are the things I must do to maintain my quality of life while saving as much money as possible.
#3. How do I support my local businesses — especially when i live in a neighborhood with so many independent markets?
Today…well today could have definitely used more planning.
So I was walking through the neightborhoodwith an empty backpack with a SXSW canvas bag inside, deciding to do some grocery shopping.
-5th & Clement – Fresh bananas & tangerines, they go into the backpack
-7th & Clement – The Smart & Final
- Upon checkout, have the startling realization of “Oh.Fuck.”
Today, walking 9 blocks to market & back, was not a good day to buy and expect to carry
1 Gallon of OJ
3 Lbs of Tangerines – purchased earlier
3 Lbs of Bananas – purchased earlier
3 Lbs of Butter
15 Lbs of Rice (A mix of brown & white)
4 Lbs of Pasta
2 Lbs of Japanese Somen Noodles
3 Lbs Sugar
2 Lbs Cheese
5 Lbs of tortillas
1 Big bottle of spaghetti sauce
1 Can of pumpkin for pumkin curry soup
1 15 Oz bottle of Worcestershre sauce
1 Hugeass bottle of coffee creamer
That’s right. Something around 50 Lbs of groceries. Granted, the grand total is less than $90 and will feed me for gawdknows how long, but I was really planning on getting some dimsum, squash and fresh veggies on the way back.
After stuffing as much as I could into the backpack & the canvas bag, two plastic bags full of groceries were humped over my shoulder that would not fit.
By the time I got out from waddling out of the parking lot, I seriously considered calling a cab to pick me and my damn groceries up for a 9 block fare. But no, that would defeat the purpose of being environmentally conscientious and frugal. I plod on and imagine my mother and her stories of hauling buckets of water 3 miles through the snow to her home. I ignore the fact that if there was snow then she shouldn’t have had to trek so far for water. It was my mom’s story of suffering. Who am I to question.
I waddled one block and then took a rest.
Maybe I could hire those teenagers to carry my bags for me.
But no, that’d be really wussy. And pathetic. Right? And totally not save me $.
Another block
Hmmm I could hop on the bus and have it take me 3 stops. WTF. I’m getting the judgement staredown from the little Chinese grandparents who know the bus systems like the back of their wrinkled hands whereas I, in sweaty desperation hauling nearly 50Lbs of groceries would wind up somewhere in Potrero hill if left to my own devices.
Two more blocks
Would it be really bad to hail down a cab? Oh wait. That’s right. SF has only like 5 cabs in the entire city. And none of them are coming through the richmond.
One more block
I sit outside of burma superstar. A little grandpa strolls past me with his groceries in a lilttle rolly cart. I envy his rolly cart and wonder how far I could get if I knocked him down with a 3 Lb box of butter, steal his cart, and ran.
5 minutes later and still catching my breath on the bench of the burma superstar, I still consider mugging the grandpa and wonder if hitting him with the somen noodles would be better.
One more block and I see a latino gentleman hauling 2 cases of coca-cola, napkins, plates, and takeout boxes (all obviously from the same smart & final that I went to) into a restaurant. He looks at me in pity. He too, has a rolly cart. Bastard.
One block further and I duck into a hardware store. While they sell cheesecloth and make keys for you and whatnot, they have no rolly carts.
Outside, I reconsider soliciting a teenager to carry my groceries again.
I start visualizing the incline of the hill towards my apartment. With the awkwardly carried 50 Lbs of grocery on my gawd.damned.poor.planning.idiotic.environmentally.fucking.committed.ass.
Tears start forming.
The incline, I know, is about 2 degrees. It might as well have been kilamanjaro to an asthmatic at that point. I was going to ahve to sit on a corner and eat all my groceries until it was light enough for me to carry the rest of the way home. Surely I could at least plow through about half the bananas and oranges before I had enough strength to move another 15 feet.
One and a half more blocks I duck into another Chinese all sorts kind of store. The kind that sells vitasoy and butcher knives and batteries and umbrellas and squash and bokchoy roots and dried pork flakes. They sell rolly carts.
And my life is saved.
The cart was $12 and I will forever after use it going up & down the street to the local market.
And damn it, I’m never fucking buying 15 Lbs of rice without my car handy ever again.
Mother of Gawd.

About the ARTISTS
Kevin Cheng
Everyone doodled as children but somewhere along the “growing up” line, Kevin missed the memo that said: “you’ve turned 6, please throw all your web-safe Crayolas away.” He kept drawing and eventually became the co-founder and artist of OK/Cancel, probably one of the top 5 online comics on interface design and usability.
Kevin is a global nomad who’s settled in San Francisco after calling Vancouver, Hong Kong, Austin and London home. Recently, he co-founded Off Panel Productions a company dedicated to helping niche comic artists publish their work online and make money doing it. He dreams of a day when every obscure hobby and profession has a comic that’s made just for them. By day, he draws pretty interfaces instead of comics.
Claudine Co is a Philippine-born Chinese-American who considers herself lucky to have escaped from behind the Orange Curtain (Orange County). She left for UC Berkeley in ’91 and never looked back. Her reigning passion is for vernacular street dance and movement and it was through a love for hip-hop culture that an obsession with graffiti, and a corresponding interest in photography ensued. She also performs with her dance company, Loose Change and trains with Capoeira USA. Her photographic interests intersect at the cusp of all her interests: street art, urban dance and movement, and abandoned buildings. When there’s some spare time, she tries to update a series of photo-life-and-food blogs at www.winterjade.com and is an avid user of Flickr.
Michael Hurt is a doctoral candidate in Ethnic Studies at Berkeley presently taking a long-ass time to write his dissertation on manifestations of extreme Korean nationalism between 1987-1997, just before the Olympic Games and the beginning of the IMF crisis. Presently, he lives and works in Seoul, while actively photographing, podcasting, and blogging as he maintains a day job teaching American History and American Culture to Korean college and high school students. All of these activities are really just cover jobs to support his home theater addiction, even as Michael should really be working harder on paying down his student loans.
Robert Kranzke aka Cecil Seaside
Robert Kranzke is a split personality: half Filipino—half Caucasian; a San Francisco native who has lived in Los Angeles for 11 years; Robert Kranzke is an artist, writer and musician who works under the name Cecil Seaside. Graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena as a fine art major in 1997, he has been working as a graphic designer while creating self-published zines: Stray, Headless Bear, and, Cecil Seaside– writing stories, poems and essays, primarily in an allegorical metafiction style. Cecil Seaside’s writing has been published in the Art Center literary magazine Fish Wrap and Cecil has a consistent internet presence in the forms of writing and photography on livejournal and flickr .
He is the author of this bio and feels very normal referring to himself in the third person.
Nicole Lee is a geek. She has this curious obsession with computers, technology, and various aspects of pop culture. Her hobbies include tinkering with her blog, chatting online, writing silly things, cooking, and reading. She also has a great deal of affection for comics. She was born and raised in Malaysia, and moved to San Francisco in 1999 to attend San Francisco State University. She earned a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism and English Literature in 2002, and a Masters of Arts in Speech & Communication Studies in 2004. Her love for technology and the written word has led her down the path of technology journalism. Her work has appeared in Wired, Gizmodo, and CNET.
Goh Nakamura
Goh Nakamura cut his teeth on the Boston Music scene providing “stunt guitar†work for various local bands. After a stint at the Berklee College of Music where he sharpened his ears, he came back to the west coast to write his own songs. He likes to think of himself as a combination of John Lennon, John Cusack and John Coltrane. However unholy this trinity is, it seems to work (at least in his head).
For the last 3 years, he’s been playing his original songs as well as an eclectic spectrum of covers at assorted venues throughout the SF Bay Area.
Goh Nakamura’s debut album, “Daylight Savingsâ€, was recently named one of the Top Ten Local Albums of 2004 by the San Jose Metro. Check him out at www.gohnakamura.com
Gerard Reyes
Gerard Reyes was made in the Philippines, assembled in the US. He grew up in Surigao City, raised in Daly City, schooled in San Francisco at Academy of Art University and at CalPoly, SLO. Dancing since he could walk, learning about music via vinyl, casette tape singles and piano lessons, and programming since 1st grade, he’s become a multi-talented Master of All Trades. Online-journamalizing since 1998, he’s done everything from audio entries to flash intros to splash pages to daily redesigns, before “web 2.0″ and “podcasting.” Hoping that he could somehow gain some knowledge in return, he likes to take everything he’s learned personally as well as professionally, and share it with the world (wide web).
He also doesn’t think writing in the third person about oneself is cute.
Paolo Sambrano can be compared to an airplane full of cheerleaders that crash-landed in Candyland. the resulting debris was a peppermint and shrapel laced pep-rally admist the burning wreckage. On a mission to bring face rocking rock and roll to the masses by any means necessary, aside from actually playing an instrument, this nineteen year old community college screw up, corporate flunkie, blogger wannabe is the creator of the UthTV show “Commerical Free Paolo”. In addition to that, he is the maintainer of Subversive Irony, and a contributor to UthTV’s blog and to SFist.
Winona Tong
Originally from Toronto, Canada, Winona has made Silicon Valley her new home. While studying Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Winona managed to garner an audience of clinically insane web stalkers time and time again, no matter how she reinvented herself and her blog. Winona has since come to terms with her own propensity to be a freak magnet and currently spends her days as an Internet recluse. As she lacks formal training in fine arts, Winona does not consider herself to be an artist but rather an “engineer
with slightly better taste than mostâ€. She is a devout Pastafarian and a supporter of the sciences.
Quite a bit going on though I feel overwhelmingly guilty and resplendant with self-flagellating for succumbing to as much inertia and entropy in my life these days. I’m reminded on why I titled my blog BrainDump so many years ago.
Inertia: Every body perseveres in its state of being at rest or of moving uniformly straight ahead, except insofar as it is compelled to change its state by forces impressed. (Reference Wikipedia)
Entropy:
1. Symbol S For a closed thermodynamic system, a quantitative measure of the amount of thermal energy not available to do work.
2. A measure of the disorder or randomness in a closed system.
3. A measure of the loss of information in a transmitted message.
4. The tendency for all matter and energy in the universe to evolve toward a state of inert uniformity.
5. Inevitable and
steady deterioration of a system or society.

” There is one person who has the faith and fame among San Francisco voters to defeat the ineffectual incumbent and win this election in November. There is one person who has galvanized the grassroots momentum necessary to beat a big-money candidate in this city. There is one person who can take this city by storm with an effective, inspiring, progressive campaign.
Matt Gonzalez is who we need to take on Nancy Pelosi. Matt Gonzalez has the integrity to actually oppose this war, to actually oppose the roll-back of the Bill of Rights, and to stand up and speak eloquently about why he is doing so. Matt Gonzalez can win this election and begin to shift the entire political discourse in this country. ”
Yup. That’s not too busy.

Non Sequiter
I can change the world. Yes, Me. Perhaps if I’m just doing mindful litle things that don’t seem drama insane, bulky, or tedious to make sure I’m appropriately managing the various levels of conservation and environmental concerns.
* Reduce quantity of toilet paper used every day
* Lower the temp on my fridge/freezer to conserve energy
* Put a brick or stone in the tank of my toilet to reduce water consumption
* Use all my trendy hipster SXSW bags for when I’m going grocery shopping to reduce waste
* Return the unused plastic bags to places like Safeway that credit you for their return/reuce
* Only run the dishwaster & laundry machine/dryer with the fullest & cost effective loads
* Turn off all lights that do *NOT* need to on in the house.
* Reduce consumer waste buy making fewer frivilous purchases and buying products in larger bulk to reduce waste. Ie the 25 lb of rice vs the 1lb bag at the marketp
* Reusing pens & paper as apporopriate for short notes, reminders, etc. in teh household or tokeep a piece in your wlaet for when, you know, you wanna ask somoene for their number…
I figure if I make these v. minor minor changes and continue to eat more healthy, locally grown fresh fruit & vegitables, I will be changing the world. If I’m good, very very good, then perhaps I can add a single beautiful second to our world. What if you and everyone you knew could do something little to stretch the lifetime of your planet by a few seconds?
I love living in SF. I learn about the fact that we can mulch in the city from a good friend.
