January 2006 Archive

How crazy am I *really* feeling.

It’s 1AM here in Dallas and I’m currently trying to decide if I should head back to SF on sunday or if I should keep on heading east until I get home to Michigan for a week or two there.

What think you?
I should probably go home, take care of some bills, fill out unemployment paperwork and what not and then if I want to continue traveling, do it via flight a bit later.

Or.. well, since I’m half-way accross the country already, just get my yayas done and out of the way and keep going?

Anyone of you guys want to sponsor me for gas & couch surfing from here to Michigan?

And is that totally fricking nuts?

Currently, all I have with me is a few pairs of jeans and clean tee shirts, some money, a fairly new car (now with 4200 miles on it) and a healthy tolerance for caffiene and long drives with good music via the XM radio.

Road Trip Update : Part Cinco

Today was delightful chillout in dallas day.
Good coffee, a driving tour of ridiculously affordable housing in dallas, decent vietnamese food, warm intimate conversations, and watching Lost on someone else’s couch for once.

No matter how little or far you drive, some things are just good to do.

The cowbell goes *Clang* for today.

Road Trip Update : Part Catorce — wait, I’m not U2, I can actually count to Cuatro

Current Location
Dallas Tx, Casa Navarro

I have arrived!

Another 212 Miles under my belt and a scant 4 hour drive.
That, my friends, may officially be considered a cakewalk.
The average speed for this journey has been obscenely pulled out of its norm via Austin traffic and an 18 wheeler deciding to roll over and play dead on the I35 as I approached Dallas.

Today was a very good day.
I slept in. I bought a cow bell.

Yes.

I am officially now with more cow bell.

The nice gentleman at Tommy’s Drum Shop in Austin even game me a shiney red drumstick with which to hit said cowbell. Now how dope is that? I do declare that said drumstick matches my new manicure from yesterday.

I failed to mention that the day before yesterday, I had delighted in the opportunity of hanging out for cocktails with 20×2 co-horts Kevin & Jeff along with other fun locals Tim o Thompson & Allison Headley along with those ever so dangerous Hacker girls.

I currently have in my phone logs an sms message scolding some jaded S.O.B. who was too busy out grocery shopping to come out and join us for Mojitos and snark talk. Hmph. That particular jaded S.O.B. that insists that my 20×2 performance of 20×2 during 2003 had a particular significance. Pshaw, whatever mr. jaded S.O.B. You’se a sucka foo with your groceries.

Anyways, back to today. After humming to myself new cowbell tunes

*Clang*
I have a cow bell.
*Clang*
I know you’re jealous.
*Clang*
You know you want one.
*Clang* *Clang*
Sucks to be you.
*Clang*
And I have a pretty red stick
*Clang*
*Clang*
*Clang*
With which to hit my cool cowbell
*Clang*
You wish you had a cow bell.
*Clang*
*Clang*
This makes me cheerful.

Afterwards, I wandered a bit down lamar and had a delightful conversation with a Tasmanian shop owner of Bitch’n Threads who chatted me up re: world travels, good coffee, and how material ownership is overrated. Oooh. And she sells Kimonos fyi.

She spotted me crossing the street and her curiosity got the best of her. She suspected that I was a free-lancer. I apparently carried myself off that way. She’s a delight and the next time I head into Austin, I plan on looking her up and hijacking her from her shop for a few hours to drink some wine and talk kimonos and world travels. I love that she’s considering openign up a 1940s style nightclub in Antigua and considers it a serious question to ask herself “Now what the hell am I goign to for the *next* 72 years of my life”

That’s the type of moxy that I love.

Later I wandered down to a small cafe called Swerve where I enjoyed some quiet time with some good coffee and some reading fo the local publications.

Tara later rounded upw ith me and showed me the grass couch that they have in the backyard.

Dope.

Following that, we had some eh… ok burgers yon at kerby’s. The burgers were advertised as “Pretty Good Burgers”. I felt jipped. Even with the bacon & cheese on top.

Yon after that I trekked from Austin to Dallas, was greeted by my lovely host J.N. and then off to Tina’s home/household/ranch for food to tease the herd of dogs at her home whom I referred to through the rest of the evening as 2nd course, 3rd course, 4th course, and Dessert. Of course Leia was there with her gorgeous smile and so were newliweds Ruaraidh & Nicole along new friend Ray.

Lovely evening. Now I’m off to dream up new Cowbell songs.

Geek Girl Collision

GookBox

Nice idea.
Terrible name.

Instead of conveying that it’s a gmail/music convergence, Gookbox sounds like the derogatory slang that an idiot would make for a Korean gal’s p*ssy.

Now that just ain’t right.

Road Trip Update : Part Tres

Current Location
Austin,TX
Hacker House for wayward girls,

There is sunshine.
I dig it.

Ms. Hummina has likened my journey out here to be like Dora in Finding Nemo.
“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming”
“Just keep driving, just keep driving”.

It’s entirely possible.

Because it really wasn’t until today that I looked at an overall map of the US and saw how significant the drive actually was.

Roadtrip 1

I suppose the big thing to learn from this experience is…
If you don’t think something’s that hard to do, then you are less likely to think that you can’t actually pull it off.

So shazam, something I need to remind myself of more often.
Even if I know something *is* hard to do, then perhaps I need to remind myself to keep things within *do-able* chunks to make them seem less daunting.

ie: From SF to Tucson was a 4 gasup trip. A trip within a single-gasup seems very do-able. Facile, even. Doing 4 gasups in a single evening seem.. well.. misleadingly easy.

Today’s been a chillout day. Manicure/pedicure & dinner (BBQ!) with my friend Henna (a ridiculously rocking electric cellist) who I had the opportunity to meet through Annie Lin whom I met at Fray Cafe SXSW 2004 and had heard wonderful things about from another blogging friend Scott Andrew whom I met at SXSW the first time I went in 2002. Funny how the world comes around again doesn’t it?

Hurray!

New Joys Appreciated
- Clean Towels, Good water pressure in the shower, Being able to close your eyes for more than 1 second without fear of dying. Most importantly, a good friend with a smile at the end of your long journey.

Most Significant thunks so far:
– The differentiation between Emancipation vs. Separation
– The power of one’s will/self scripting for both failure & success
– The need to have more regular spirit journeys. Ideally that don’t involve driving through dense fog for 120 miles at 3 AM.

Damn it.

The bloggies around again this year.

Sadly, the category for best essay about weblogs/blogging has been discontinued.

Otherwise, I’d have guessed that my Lifecycles of Bloggers post
(considered in the top 25 blogposts of 2005 by Blogpulse) would have been a serious contender.

Regardless, go nominate & vote!

Huh?

So Google’s logo today is in braille because today’s the creator’s bday?

Oddly enough my laptop screen does not have bumps. Nope. Not at all. Not even for when I’ve accidentally sneezed on the screen.

I’m v. confused and not sure if I should be offended by this if I were blind.

I mean… I’m guessing that 90%+ of the folks who can see probably can’t read braille. And if there were a web browsing application that transforms text to speech, it wouldn’t even work on the google logo image because it’s a gif.

I may be entirely overthinking this.

Pillow Talk

Dear 2006,

I know it’s kinda sudden and kinda soon and everything, and I know for certain that our little romance over the next year is going to be a rollercoaster and I’m ok with that.
I mean, you know what kinda of baggage I come with.

But you also know how good I can be to you if you’ll let me.

But Jayzus. A $230 bill to kick off the new year for replacing the driver’s side mirror on my car?

On our first date?

When you know my car is just 3 months old?

And, like, I’m not even, really, like income-heavy right now?

Um.
You got my attention.
That’s quite sufficient.
You better make it up to me baby, because we have a *long long long long long* way to go.

Thanks for listening hon,
*smooches*
MJ

Just… Brilliant.

Have you ever written a FUCK YOU post?

I mean, besides to something that’s completely anthropomorphised for comic relief (ie, your belly, your ass, the previous year, your dog’s particularly sticky poo, a slice of cheese, your bass guitar, or the xbox)

One of my favorite spoken word poets Shailja is fairly well known for her extraordiarny talent, political in-your-face- unapologeticism, and general sass, and her explosively creative FUCK YOU breakup poem. It’s a fave o’ mine. I dig it. But that’s because I’m a generally lilttle angry woman and refer to the occasional ex-boyfriend affectionally with “oooh.. you mean skull-fuck… ew… why bring that up again}.

And I dig it more that she’s blogging.

And giving a big Fuck-You to hollywood.
For SHAME. Making Michelle Yeoh (who speaks perfect english) have to act in an entire film with a japanesey accent.

It’s gawddamn 2006 already. Didn’t we dump the me-so-solly accents already?

Jayzus.
