APA Roundup
Oh jayzus.
I’m watching the AZN Asian Excellence awards on TV.
It’s like they got everyone who eats rice in Los Angeles to attend or be nominated to this thing.
Here’s my… uh… play by play commentary..
Hosted by Kelly Hu & Bobby Lee
Some highlights:
Bai Ling — amazingly, she kept her top on. And thank goodness, she’s not singing.
Lou Diamond Phillips - Yuppers. He’s Asian. Para Bailar La Bamba of brown = indiscriminate ethnic minority. Well, he’s got dem cheekbones.
Yunjin Kim — “I really don’t know what to say.. I’m feeling kind of Lost.. and I’m not being humble and Asian but lets…tell our stories and let’s not wait for Hollywood to determine when it’s our time… and please let’s do those great projects when I Gert killed off from Lost and when I lose my tan”
The Remy Martin XO Inspiration awards…. i mean.. dude.. how fricking korean club can you get with the Remy.
This goes to Doctor Ho who’s been doing some amazing work in researching in AIDS.
Presented by Magic Johnson. Who is not Asian. But has probably had a little Asian at some point in his life. (badump bum)
Hmmm John Cho looks like he needs a haircut.
Both Joan Chen & Michelle Krusciek won nominations for the fabulous film Saving Face which I endorse to anyone and everyone.
Holy Shit.. Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park… combining both rap & violins…. Stop.Me.From.Cracking.A.Joke.
Holy Crap … From Flower Drum Song they have Nancy Kwan and James Shigeta. Pearl Cream done good.
Outstanding Newcomer winner - Lynn Chen who was also in Saving Face. Uber cute.
Outstanding shout outs to Ismael Merchant - Lifetime achievement. Producer of some brilliant favorite films like room with a view. Must have inspired Ang Lee to work with pasty white British people. I jest. I jest.
Gratuitous fashion shows…um…kay….2 of them.
Outstanding Film winner is Kung Fu Hustle.
Go Stephen Chow and gang… but I was hoping this was going to focus more on American films with APA’s vs. overseas films that have crossed over well here to the Us.
Um… Ka… Cirque De Soleil
To note: Jackie Chan sounds way more comfortable speaking English than Stephen Chow did. And less awkwardly like it’s being read from a TelePrompter.
Biggest Asian-file in Hollywood - Quentin Terentino wins some recognition.
Sadly, he likely is still the most powerful person in Hollywood that in that room.
Best Live performance
Nominees…
Ka - Cirque De Soleil
Lennon - Broadway performance (For YOKO? YOKO?)
Linkin Park - winning for their performance in live8 (ummm… did Joe Hahn gain a little weight?.. he looks cuddly..)
Rob Shneider is presenting. I had no idea he was Hapa. huhh.
BabyPhat gets her own fashion strut showcase as well. My…word…
Kimora Lee Simmons couldn’t accept the award so Vivica Fox is sporting the bling.
Ralph Macchio gives the shout out for Pat Morita.
Mr. Miyagi would be very proud of Daniel-san. Woot.
Karen Hom doing some zither action…
Outstanding TV Male performers… — The nominees are…
Naveen andrews - Lost
Mark-Paul Gossellar of Commander in Chief
Daniel Dae Kim - Lost
BD Wong - Law & Order - SVU
So cool… only one of them who doesn’t actually look too Asian.
Daniel Dae Kim wins… totally big hotness.
Hmmm… Kelly Hu has changed outfits more time than a Taiwanese Wedding’s bride. I mean, seriously.
The Visibility Award goes to Lucy Liu and presented by Danny Devito & Rhea Perlman. Woot… Unicef Ambassador and speaks Chinese & Italian and uh.. plays the accordion?! Oh my.
And huh… 2 hours later it’s done.
How do I feel? Hmmm ok. Not as snarky as I totally could have been.
