MinJungKim.com Braindump v 6.0 Gah. I’m still doing this?

Huh?

So Google’s logo today is in braille because today’s the creator’s bday?

Oddly enough my laptop screen does not have bumps. Nope. Not at all. Not even for when I’ve accidentally sneezed on the screen.

I’m v. confused and not sure if I should be offended by this if I were blind.

I mean… I’m guessing that 90%+ of the folks who can see probably can’t read braille. And if there were a web browsing application that transforms text to speech, it wouldn’t even work on the google logo image because it’s a gif.

I may be entirely overthinking this.

this reminds me of the braille institute in Sebastopol…the road sign (huuuge) is in braille. of COURSE blind people aren’t going to go up to a 10 foot sign and read the big ass braille on it! ha.

good clarification here for me. the first thing i googled today was for my optometrist, and then the braille came up. i thought it was some super cool fuzzy logic programming thing. so cool i flickr’d it.

duh!

The image includes the alternate text ‘A picture of the Braille letters spelling out “Google.” Happy Birthday Louis Braille!’, which is sufficient for users of screenreading software to get the joke. Accessibility, baby!

Too bad it’s still buried in a presentational table and the document isn’t anywhere close to valid.

Ah, but one of the wonderful things about the HTML is that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to make web sites accessible to the visually-impaired.

*puts webgeek hat on*

If you “View Source”, you’ll see that Google made sure to use the “alt” and “title” attribute to the <img> tag. Screen readers for the blind will read the alt attribute which says, “A picture of the Braille letters spelling out ‘Google.’ Happy Birthday Louis Braille!” and so, they’ll get the message. :)

Nah, you are not overthinking it if you haven’t talked about its colors. :-)

funny, the exact same thought came to mind when i saw the logo.

Flip side: how cool is it that they’re bringing attention to the creator of Braille’s birthday? And in terms of accessibility, it might make a whole new bunch of people consider what a problem the web must be for those who are visually impaired.

I think it’s cool

I think its cool because it brings attention to a BDay that probably would go unnoticed. Happy BDay Louis

Oh I guess this is a bad time to use the old “braille bumps at the drive-thru ATM” joke too right?
