Little Nerd Brag

Ok.

I just successfully got my mac to read and start downloading the mp3s from my PC. Wirelessly.
(which, care of freeware, are all appropriately named & tagged)
Pictures too from the PC into Iphoto.
And hooked up with the Airport Express in the Living Room.
Plus boosted the wifi signal in the apartment.
And oh yeah, gave a friend from across the country a tour of my apartment
Via the laptop and Isight.

I’ve had a really really nerdy feeling day.

Extra Extra Nerdy Next projects?

Gutting my old PC for the hard drive and dumping the cases.
Loading em up into these hard drive enclosures for sharing files between PC & Powerbook (think loads of good media shtuff)
Getting my Usenet Account (Free via Comcast) up and rolling again.

Rawkers In the House

I wonder if it’s a true sign that you’re a San Franciscan when houseguests start appearing underfoot.
Yes, indeed it’s true.

When I first moved to the bay area a few years back, my place was immediately turned into the crash pad for countless guests including but not limited to sorority sisters, internet buddies, family members, highschool friends, and college biblestudy mates. This was a great thing as it assuaged my imediate sense of home-sickness and lonliness by having those that I loved physically near to me. Within hug’s reach and occasionally underfoot but in a good way. It also forced me to explore the area wildly, recklessly, and aggressively as I put together lists of things to do both touristy and not.

In the 6 weeks that I’ve taken up residence in SF proper, my home has already been host to Comic artists, the little brother of my roommate/politician and three very talented musicians (Annie Lin, Kris Racer, and Henna Chou) who found themselves at my doorstep at near midnight because other housing plans fell through. I have another friend visiting and crashing here this weekend who is planning on moving out here in the next few weeks. That equals on average 1 houseguest per week I’ve lived in SF. Wow.

Fascinating and lovely conversations kept me up til nearly 4 Am. That and late night noshing of noodles.

Late Night Grub recipe for a Warm Evening
* Wide Rice noodles: Cooked thoroughly and then rinsed with cold water and drained
* Dipping Sauce made to taste from
Soy Sauce
Sesame Oil
White Vinegar
Wasabi
* Furukaki

Ladle a pool of diping sauce into a bowl
Curl a small handful of the cold noodles (drained well) into the bowl on top
Sprinkle with Furukaki of your choice (I always have several bottles on hand including two vegetarian versions w/o dried fish flakes in them)

If you’re interested in seeing a few of my houseguests perform this week, please plan for it. It’ll be AWESOME. I had the opportunity to see Annie perform twice this year. Once at SXSW in Austin during FrayCafe and once for Locus Arts

Run Jane Run – MJ’s Online Fundraising Campaign

OK, so I don’t need a Christian Dior Bag.
I’ve got 2 shreds of dignity left (just 2 mind you) so that I won’t pull together a Save Karen kind of campaign. But I do like checking out new applications and services and Dropcash seems like a very interesting one indeed.

Sooo with that in mind, I’ve pulled together a Dropcash Fundraising campaign on behalf of Jane Kim’s race for SF Schoolboard.

Snaps Snaps Snaps for Me

Two things I’ve grown ever more in love with.

#1. Video-On-Demand on Comcast including the free movie content. I caught Legally Blonde 2 the other night. Yeah yeah yeah, I know, bubble gum goodness and a guilty pleasure — but then again, you already knew I was a dork based on my Flash Dance obsession.

#2. Taking pix of my friends.
Dealership on the night of their Tour Kickoff over at Eli’s Mile High – performance with 14 Year Old Girls.

Heavenly States

Rawk.

Ew.

Kissing Bandit: Detestable.
Moi: What now?
Kissing Bandit: That dreadfully rude behavior.
Moi: What now?
Kissing Bandit: That, that, that… THING!
Moi: Is this a her thing or a him thing.
Kissing Bandit: *shaking hands up at the air*
Moi: Oh. Yeah. Why do you still let it bug you? Have a cigarette and chill darlin’.
Kissing Bandit: Why won’t they just DIE already.
Moi: Well. Ok. We can arrange that too.
Kissing Bandit: Damnable, detestable, disgusting thing.
Moi: All this because you’d rather spritz and wait out mildew than pick up a sponge.
Kissing Bandit: Uh Hello?! Manicure?!
Moi: Oh yeah. Right. Beg pardon. I forgot what was at stake here.

Brilliant.

Think I’m blowing you off on IM?

Now you can be confident that I really *am* blowing you off on IM.

Check it.

Just got ISight.

And added in the plugin for IChat that changes my IM icon to a live video feed image.

You may now look at the back of my head as I try to do some work and ignore you.

Snaps & Bytes.

#1. Foodpoisoning = Not fun x 20
#2. Powernapping = Way good for you X 50
#3. Multiple outings in one eveingin = Good but too much
#4. Sailing = Way good.
#5. Too much sun = Maybe not so good
#6. It is true. I could probably write an entire thesis paper on the social dynamics and commentary based on “Flash Dance.” the movie. (Take Alex in the restaurant with Rick. Where he weilds socio-economic prowess in taking her, his employee, to a shmancy restaurant, — she obviously couteracts and succeeds with erotic dominance. In this case, is it not uncommon in socioeconomic paradigms to see powerplay equalized based on physical desirability and sexual atributes? Sucking on that piece of lobster and when asked how it is, responding disdainfully “It sucks.” Think Evita, yo.)
Yes, I said it. I gawddamn love that flick.

Holy Crap.

Ok now, I’ve gotten 3 invitations to check out Multiply. Woopy.
And then some bumps in activity re: Myspace and relationship linking.

So in curiosity, cuz I dig checking out what’s going on in the social networking sphere (though not enough people actually use Dodgeball in SF to make me feel like it’s working it’s best for me) I start puttering around and register with Multiply.

Consider me crapping my pants. It’s promising a whole lot.

Particularly with regards to the functionality of importing all your contacts/profiles from Friendster/Orkut into Multiply and auto generating an invitation mail to these folks in addition to allowing for power editing/mass editing of relationship schema.

Now of course, you hyper nerds are asking … but does it XFN or FOAF.

It *does* however have over 30 different and unique descriptors to deliniate a relationship.
Not focusing as much on making new contacts (for getting laid or getting funding…in which case you may have to suck dick) as it is in developing and nurturing, providing transparency for existing relationships. Will it ever get critical mass? This always being the big question with regards to these social networking applications?

Well… if the import function works as well as it looks (i am nervous about pressing the “send” button as yet) then it very well could and we could see a mass exodus of activity from friendster and orkut (which have their alreayd existing structurual and speed limitations and server outages) to Multply (resulting in Multiply’s service outage). Some things that I see so far that could be leveraged effectively: The group calendering function that is in Tribe.net and used well, along with the fanclub/band association and group distros used well on Myspace. And then integrated blogging communitiy which vibes a little like Xanga or Livejournal. Oh, did I forget to mention the spinoff integration that they’re touting that likens itself to Flickr or Buzznet? Or the Marketplace hierarchy not unlike Craigslist and Tribe?

This is interesting. Very very interesting.

My Milkshake is so Better than Yours

Convo w/ the Vain and Silly:

V&S: I need to lose weight.
Moi: Don’t be silly. You’re Gorgeous. Goy-Jeyous!
V&S: Well they say you can never be too rich or too thin.
Moi: Pht.. Sure.
V&S: So I’m trying that whole South Beach Diet thing.
Moi: And that’s going well?
V&S: Eh… it’s ok.
Moi: Me, I’m on that North Beach Diet thing.
V&S: What’s that?
Moi: Oh. Pizza. Pasta. Greasy Chinese Food. Strippers.
V&S: Nice.

Successes and room for Growth.

My housewarming party went well on Friday. People sprinkled in and out and I’m not sure how many of the attendees were able to grab envelopes to donate to Jane’s campaign or hear about her stance re: after school programs and education, funding to keep staff on board, and etc. I consider it a success for many reasons. A) Good time had by all. B) A hangover from having about 4 Min Jung’s. (That’d be the drink…. A whisky sour combo w/ lemon soju) C) The band HijackTheDisco TOTALLY FARKING RAWKED. D) We raised a few bucks and some awareness for Ms. Jane.

More information is as always @ www.janekim.org

Donations can be made online via the very cool service Click & Pledge

Please consider volunteering or attending one of Jane’s events in the future.

A few more initiatives for me to get under my belt.
a) Register to Vote (yes I’m overdue)
b) Do it via Absentee Ballot so I can avoid going to the polls and encouraging others to do the same so that they can get their vote in, done, and out of the way. This year, more than ever, for local and national politics, every single vote will count.
c) Take Election Day off of work and help drive folks into the polling locations. Literally helping get out the vote.

What will you do?

Conversation with the Kissing Bandit: 8.9.04

Moi: Well?
Kissing Bandit: Ugh.
Moi: That bad?
Kissing Bandit: Worse.
Moi: You mean you had to talk to what’s his bucket with the tattoo.
Kissing Bandit: Yup.
Moi: He still had the tattoo.
Kissing Bandit: Yup.
Moi: He still miss you madly.
Kissing Bandit: Yup.
Moi: So what made it bad.
Kissing Bandit:…
Moi: …
Kissing Bandit:…
Moi: No.
Kissing Bandit: Yes.
Moi: No!
Kissing Bandit: uh… Yes.
Moi: NO! FUCKING NO! NO! NO!
Kissing Bandit: Uh. Yes.

Moi: I can’t believed you hooked up with him. I mean… I understand ex sex but Jayzus!
Kissing Bandit: I know.
Moi: Well was it as good as you remembered?
Kissing Bandit:Definitely not.
Moi: Oh. Shit.
Kissing Bandit: Yeah. Actually the ex sex was pretty bad.
Moi: OH NO!
KB: So not worth it.
Moi: How come we haven’t bought you a chastity belt yet?

Nicely done. I’m over due.

This is, by far, the best reasonng behind seeing the film Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.
